Aluminium Sheet vs Aluminium Foil for Insulation Jacketing: Which Should You Use?

Industrial insulation does not end with choosing the right thermal material. The insulation also needs an outer layer that protects it from moisture, physical damage, weather exposure, and everyday plant conditions.

Two materials commonly considered are aluminium sheet and aluminium foil. Although both are made from aluminium, they serve different functions within an insulation system.

So, should you use an aluminium jacketing sheet or aluminium foil? The right answer depends on the equipment, installation environment, required durability, and purpose of the outer layer.

What Is an Insulation Jacketing System?

An insulation jacketing system is the protective outer layer installed over insulation on pipes, ducts, tanks, vessels, and industrial equipment.

Its purpose is to help protect the insulation beneath it from:

  • Rain and moisture

  • Physical impact

  • UV and outdoor exposure

  • Oil, dirt, and contaminants

  • Routine maintenance activities

  • General wear and tear

Without suitable jacketing, insulation may become wet, compressed, torn, or exposed. This can reduce thermal performance and shorten the service life of the complete system.

What Is an Aluminium Jacketing Sheet?

An aluminium sheet is a relatively rigid metal covering used as external cladding over industrial insulation. It can be cut, rolled, formed, and secured around pipes, tanks, ducts, and other insulated equipment.

Jereco supplies 1060 and 3003 aluminium sheets in Singapore. These aluminium grades are valued for their workability, corrosion resistance, and suitability for cladding and industrial fabrication.

Because it is thicker and stronger than foil, an aluminium jacketing sheet is normally selected when the insulation requires a durable exterior surface.

What Is Aluminium Foil Used for in Insulation?

Aluminium foil is a thin, lightweight material generally supplied in rolls. It may be used as a reflective layer, vapour-control layer, facing, or additional protective barrier within an insulation assembly.

Jereco’s pure aluminium foil is made with 99% pure aluminium and is available in 100-metre reels. It is lightweight, reflective, recyclable, and resistant to water vapour, grease, and gas.

Aluminium foil is useful in applications such as:

  • Pipeline and duct insulation

  • Vapour and moisture control

  • Reflective thermal barriers

  • Insulation facings

  • Power and communication cable protection

  • Indoor mechanical systems

Reinforced foil may also be used where greater tear resistance is required. Jereco’s double-sided reinforced aluminium foil, for example, is designed for heat and sound insulation applications, including HVAC ducts and pipes.

Is Aluminium Sheet Thicker Than Aluminium Foil?

Yes. Material thickness is one of the clearest differences between the two products.

Aluminium sheet is significantly thicker and more rigid. It can retain a formed shape and provide a protective external shell around the insulation.

Aluminium foil is much thinner and more flexible. It can wrap around surfaces easily but does not provide the same level of mechanical protection as metal sheet jacketing.

In simple terms:

  • Aluminium sheet provides structural protection.

  • Aluminium foil provides a lightweight barrier or facing.

They should not automatically be treated as substitutes for one another.

Which Material Is More Durable?

An aluminium jacketing sheet is usually more durable when exposed to physical impact, handling, outdoor conditions, and repeated maintenance activities.

For industrial facilities, this can be important around:

  • Exposed pipework

  • Outdoor tanks

  • Process equipment

  • Utility systems

  • Mechanical rooms

  • Marine and offshore installations

  • Areas with regular worker access

Aluminium foil can resist moisture and reflect radiant heat, but thin foil may tear or puncture more easily. Reinforced foil offers improved strength, although it still does not normally provide the same rigid protection as sheet metal cladding.

Should You Use Aluminium Sheets for Outdoor Insulation?

Aluminium sheet is generally the more suitable option for outdoor insulation jacketing because it creates a durable weather-resistant exterior.

Singapore’s humid and frequently wet environment makes proper jacketing especially important. Outdoor insulation can be exposed to heavy rain, condensation, sunlight, and airborne contaminants.

However, the effectiveness of the system depends on more than the metal itself. Joints, overlaps, fasteners, penetrations, and terminations must also be detailed correctly to limit water entry.

An aluminium sheet cannot compensate for poor installation. The complete insulation jacketing system must be designed and fitted as one coordinated assembly.

When Is Aluminium Foil the Better Option?

Aluminium foil may be the better choice when the project requires a lightweight reflective or vapour-control layer rather than rigid external cladding.

It is commonly considered when:

  • The application is indoors or protected

  • Mechanical impact is limited

  • A reflective facing is required

  • The material must fit complex shapes

  • Low weight is important

  • The foil forms one layer within a larger insulation system

For ductwork, interior services, cable applications, and selected pipeline systems, aluminium foil can provide useful thermal and moisture-related benefits without the weight or fabrication requirements of sheet metal.

Can Aluminium Sheet and Aluminium Foil Be Used Together?

Yes. They can perform complementary roles within the same insulation system.

For example, aluminium foil may act as a facing or vapour-control layer closer to the insulation, while aluminium sheet forms the durable outer cladding. The exact arrangement depends on the operating temperature, insulation material, exposure conditions, and project specification.

Using both does not automatically improve performance. Each layer must have a defined purpose and must be compatible with the complete system.

Which Option Is Better for Pipes, Tanks, and Ducts?

The choice can be simplified by considering the application:

For outdoor pipes: Aluminium sheet is usually preferred for durable external protection.

For tanks and vessels: Aluminium jacketing sheet is commonly selected because it can be fabricated around large surfaces and withstand industrial conditions.

For indoor ducts: Aluminium foil or reinforced foil may be suitable when reflective performance, vapour control, or a lightweight finish is the main requirement.

For exposed industrial equipment: Aluminium sheet is generally the stronger option where impact and weather resistance matter.

For insulation facings: Aluminium foil is usually more practical because it is thin, flexible, and easy to laminate or wrap.

What Should You Confirm Before Requesting a Quotation?

Before contacting an aluminium sheet Singapore or aluminium foil Singapore supplier, provide as much application information as possible.

Confirm:

  • Equipment type and dimensions

  • Indoor or outdoor installation

  • Operating temperature

  • Insulation material and thickness

  • Required sheet or foil thickness

  • Exposure to moisture or chemicals

  • Mechanical-impact risks

  • Preferred alloy, finish, or reinforcement

  • Fabrication and installation requirements

Clear project information allows the supplier to recommend a more suitable material and provide a more accurate quotation.

Which Aluminium Jacketing Material Should You Choose?

Choose an aluminium sheet when the insulation needs a strong, formed, and durable external covering. Choose aluminium foil when the system needs a lightweight reflective, facing, or vapour-control layer.

For some industrial projects, the right solution may include both.
